Youth Retreat This Weekend – Upcoming Mardi Gras Celebration, Habitat Build Date

MLK Weekend Youth Retreat, January 18-19: In his Letter from a Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed”. The theme of this year’s MLK Weekend Youth Retreat will explore a faith-based response to mass incarceration. All middle and high school youth are invited to participate in this joint project between St. Luke’s in Long Beach and St. Cross. The planning team is putting together an immersive and transformative experience that will include service, conversation, and reflection; all aimed at helping us understand how our faith calls us to respond to mass incarceration.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS for Sunday, February 23 and Tuesday, February 25, because you definitely won’t want to miss this year’s very special Mardi Gras when we are celebrating Rev. Rachel! The Rev. Canon Melissa McCarthy, the diocesan Canon to the Ordinary, will preach that Sunday with receptions following each service. Tuesday’s Mardi Gras party will continue the festivities. Watch for details in the February Crossroads. LAISSEZ LES BONS TEMPS ROULER!

Upcoming Habitat Build Date Feb. 22: We will begin singups later this month, but go ahead and mark your calendars for February 22 as the next Habitat for Humanity build.

Note that the office will be closed on Monday, January 20 in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
