VBS Reflection

During VBS, I am reminded of this truth: This is the kids’ church–we’re just taking care of it until they’re ready to take over.

For one week during the Summer the kids do take over. The kids are the ones reading the Gospel. The kids are the ones leading the prayers. The kids are the ones singing the songs (and dancing. gasp!). The kids are the ones making connections between our faith and our world, especially during science, craft, and recreation stations. The kids are the ones getting into fights then figuring out how to reconcile with each other. The kids are the ones teaching and guiding the younger kids, helping them understand and make sense of the lessons.

Throughout VBS, the kids are the ones inviting the whole church back to the heart of our faith. Reminding us of that childlike awe and wonder, which Jesus also calls us to. VBS is not just about silly dance moves and water balloon fights. It’s about how kids’ presence and leadership this week calls us, like Jesus did, to come to God like children.
