Update from Rev. Rachel
Dear St. Cross,
I want to update you a bit about my sabbatical, which I feel has taken a lead from the “best laid plans of mice and men” poem.
Soon after my sabbatical started in mid-May, first my uncle and then my aunt (his wife) started to have some health issues. Rather than enjoy San Francisco with Chad and travel through California to visit family, I went to Spokane to care for my uncle, aunt, and their dogs. I tried to resume my sabbatical on a trip to the east coast, but then my aunt’s health failed again and I had to fly back to Spokane because I was her medical power of attorney. She died the day after I arrived. My uncle is turning to me for major support, including by helping with finances and cleaning out their home. I know this story is familiar to many of you.
Jack and I talked as this was happening. After my aunt died the Vestry agreed that I should switch to bereavement / family leave, as there is nothing restful or restorative about the current situation. I have cancelled many of my plans (including a trip to Paris). I am still working out a schedule with the associates about when I will be back. There are a few short activities I will still engage in, such as a family gathering later in July and a quick trip to Isle Royale which has been planned for over a year.
I will get to France sometime next year and will again work with the associates to find some time when I can re-try to take sabbatical, which I still need so I can be the best rector and leader for you. I realize there are many important issues happening at the moment locally. Know that I will get back as soon as I can. Until then, I ask for your prayers and appreciate your understanding as I work through this challenging and unexpected time.
Yours in Christ,
Rev. Rachel+
