Softball Update – June 2024

A short-handed St. Cross fell just short of overcoming an early deficit, falling to Lawndale Wesleyan 14-11. Jimmy Shannon lead the way with two triples and a home run while driving in four and holding down the fort at shortstop. Other standout performers include Chris Mur striking out two on the mound and going 3-for-3 at the plate, a double and 2 RBIs for Ellie Weissenberg, Becca Singer’s 2 runs off of 2 hits and a walk, first career hit and run for Dennis Ittner, and 2 runs plus great defensive outfield work for Jenna Anglin in her debut. Our next game will be at 5:50pm on Saturday, June 15th at El Nido Park in Redondo Beach.

Last Saturday, St. Cross participated in the opening game of our 31st season in the South Bay Church Athletic League (SBCAL). The game, which featured a potentially record-breaking 18 different players for St. Cross, ended in a tight 16-13 loss to the second team of Torrance’s Nova Community Church. Rev. Stephen Smith led the way on offense, going 3-for-3 with 3 runs and a monster 2-run home run while manning first base. Other standout performances on offense include triples from both Andrew Mertz and Ryan Santos, a pair of hits and some fantastic baserunning from second-year player Tobie Ogar, and a pair of hits and RBIs for newcomer Chris Mur. It was also a great debut for St. Cross softball newcomers Dennis Ittner and Alexis Nestman. Our next game will be at 1:50pm on Saturday, June 8th at El Nido Park in Redondo Beach.
