Bishop Taylor’s Statement Regarding Communion Wine
As we learn more about the coronavirus, Bishop John Taylor has informed all Episcopal churches in the Diocese of Los Angeles that communion wine may not be offered, either for sipping or by intinction, until we can be confident that the threat of COVID-19 infections have abated. Beginning this Sunday, and until the restriction is lifted, the clergy will offer only the bread (wafers) to the congregation for consumption during Holy Eucharist.
During this time, it is helpful to remember that according to our theology of the Holy Eucharist, the work of the sacrament is complete when taken in bread only. The clergy will wash their hands vigorously before their work at the altar begins, and the wafers will be distributed as normal at the altar rail and at a station in the Narthex.
Please feel free to contact the clergy if you have any questions, and you can find Bishop Taylor’s full letter here.
