Rev. Deborah Dunn
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of the Rev. Deborah Dunn, priest in the Episcopal Church and former associate at St. Cross from 1992-93. The Episcopal Church was blessed by Deborah's priestly presence. Her gifts were first noticed by a priest who could not, because of his own beliefs, present her himself for Holy Orders. But he told a nearby priest friend about her and said that the church would be richer by her ministry. The church has indeed been richer. Thanks be to God for people like Deborah and a priest who could put his own beliefs aside for the sake of the whole church.
Deborah is fondly remembered at St. Cross for many of her gifts, but especially her preaching. Patsy Brierley said to me how much she looked forward to seeing Deborah in the pulpit. But the Sunday Patsy remembers the most was the time that Deborah started to preach and then burst into song! After singing the entire song she preached the remainder of her sermon. Everyone was surprised. No one knew she had such a fabulous voice. After this initial foray into signing in preaching, she would include song from time to time in her preaching as well as being a favorite to chant the liturgy. Truly, Deborah was a gift to St. Cross and all of the churches where she served. Well done good and faithful servant, rest with God.
